[About the Book]

In rural Japan, songs and dances were deeply woven into everyday life.
This volume is a valuable ethnographic study that documents and analyzes agricultural rituals and everyday folk songs passed down orally in the Shizuoka region of Japan.

Throughout the agricultural year, work songs—such as labor chants, rice-planting songs, and mud-puddling songs—not only helped the tasks proceed smoothly but also carried prayers for abundant harvests and a spirit of playfulness. Songs were also performed during celebrations such as weddings, new-house ceremonies, and festivals. At local shrine festivals, processional songs, neri songs, and dance songs enlivened the festivities. Furthermore, lullabies and children’s songs encapsulated cultural practices meant to entertain, soothe, and teach the young.

This book offers readers the opportunity to experience the rich culture of song and dance that once permeated the daily lives of the Japanese people, presented through abundant folkloric materials from Shizuoka.
It is an ideal resource for researchers and general readers interested in folklore, Japanese cultural studies, rural culture, folk music, and festival traditions.
