It has been a long time since I belonged to the Wild Bird Society of Japan, and started to guide birdwatching
groups. Although I have only observed wild birds with binoculars and a Prominar, one day
a participant of the bird-watching group asked me if I would be taking photos of the birds. I had never
thought of taking photos of birds. Of course, there were members of the Wild Bird Society who did take
photos of the birds. Considering the cost of film and developing the film, I thought I would not be able to
join this world. Since around 2003, digital SLR cameras have become cheaper and more powerful than
ever. It was then that I decided to start taking wild bird photos because it seemed like I could finally afford
the cost.
I chose to shoot at Mt. Fuji, and at the foot of the mountain. Mt. Fuji and its surroundings have a
variety of environments, such as rivers, lakes, marshes, grasslands, and forests, with areas ranging from
mountainous to subalpine. Many species of birds inhabit the area according to the vegetation and altitude.
Most of the areas I take photos are the same areas of the Fuji Foothills where I conduct guided tours for
bird-watching groups. No feeding, no shooting in watery areas, no attracting birds with recorded calls, and
no cutting down trees to create shooting locations. I try to capture the birds in their natural state. Among
them, there are two exceptions: the picture I took of a Japanese paradise flycatcher at a watering hole, and
a female yellow-throated bunting, which I attracted by spreading food in the meadow next to the forest.
There are 152 pictures of 106 species. Some of the birds are duplicated because they are arranged by
season and month. I know that many of my photos are not very good, and some of them are not good
enough to publish as a photo collection. I have been taking photos with the intention of eventually
compiling them, so I decided to summarize them here.
